QUESTION: Bob:
I bought a used 2002 Toyota Prius 1st generation fuel cell and was wondering if the fuel cell goes out…can I just run the car on gas without replacing the battery. I hate to put out thousands$ on a new battery at this point.

ANSWER: Are you sure you have a fuel cell in a Prius? If so, there will be a hydrogen filler as well as a gas cap A standard Prius will work well with some loss of battery performance, but very poorly once the battery is bad. You might want to seek out a specific Prius owner’s group to explore your options in detail.

QUESTION: Bob:
It may not be a fuel cell….but it has a battery. I just dont know if I should trade it in…or take a chance on battery going bad. It has electronic power steering and every once in a while it goes haywire and the steering wheel shakes. Its $2000 + for that if it goes out…then $3000 for battery….crap …it gets 40 mpg…but the cost of repair could kill that savings.
